Job Title: Field Research Assistant
Job Description
The Research Assistant will perform a variety of routine tasks associated with the multi-crop research station. Tasks will include field research operations, sample processing, and general facility maintenance. The work will be both indoor and outdoor, depending on the stage of the annual research program. This position requires the ability to follow both written and oral instructions, with close supervision provided.
Responsibilities
- Perform field research operations such as planting, thinning, weeding, pollination, and sample harvest.
- Process samples by preparing supplies, sorting, scanning, weighing, and preparing for shipping and seed packaging.
- Assist with general facility operations including clean-up, organization of samples and supplies, and other routine tasks.
- Place wooden garden stakes in fields, pull samples from wheat fields, and load them into bags.
- Pull weeds in the field, conduct plant sampling, cut leaves and ears, and place them in bins for sampling.
- Perform cross-pollination tasks.
- Take inventory and conduct computer work, including scanning barcodes.
Essential Skills
- Ability to follow directions and work well with others.
- Basic computer skills, including iPad operation.
- Ability to work outside in various weather conditions (heat, mud, dust, rain).
- Safety-conscious and reliable.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with sample collection, packaging, and processing.
- General labor, data entry, packing, labelling, quality inspection, and sorting skills.
- Ability to understand and follow both written and oral instructions.

We provide all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), except for steel-toed boots which we will reimburse if required. This position offers a chance to be part of a dedicated team, contributing to meaningful research while gaining valuable experience.
Work Environment
The work environment involves both indoor and outdoor tasks. Outdoor work can include exposure to heat, mud, dust, and various weather conditions. Inside tasks involve computer work and inventory management. All necessary PPE is provided, except for steel-toed boots which may be required for certain tasks. The work schedule is 40 hours per week, with shifts from 7:30am to 4:00pm. Tasks can be fast-paced and may change daily, providing a dynamic and engaging work environment.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Hartford City, Indiana.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $17.50 - $17.50/hr.
